Not-so-Shocking News

Tom Cruise has been dropped by Paramount. Is anyone else surprised by their lack of shock to this news? It's stated that Paramount has found Cruise's off-screen behavior to be unacceptable. Let's see, couch-jumping, criticizing post-partum depression and antidepressants, combined with the whole Scientology thing and a dip in his box office numbers... what is Paramount thinking?

Oh, that's right. Tom Cruise is a sinking ship. Paramount was just smart enough to realize that.

Not to mention taking on Matt Lauer and sounded like a paranoid nutjob.

I'm confused by this whole thing. I thought that the studio system was over and the talent was pretty much a free agent type of thing.

From my understanding, Paramount and Tom Cruise had a contractual arrangement where they produced several of his movies. The announcement basically indicated that Paramount would no longer be producing Tom Cruise movies, due to his "unacceptable" behavior off screen. Tom Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner have hit back, saying that THEY were the ones who chose to walk away from Paramount and that the studio is slandering Cruise.

Either way, I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise too much anymore. I agree with LisaB, taking on Matt Lauer was the final nail in the coffin for me... "That's just glib, Matt. You're being glib..." CLICK.
